The Nanaimo Obesity Support Group meets the third Wednesday of each month at the NRGH in Room G235 from 7-9:00 pm. The group chairs are Kim Freer (250) 722-3647 and Diana Pearse (250) 714-0110.

The Kelowna Bariatric Supprt Group meets the second Saturday of each month at Perkins Restaurant at 12:00 noon. Monika Sapriken is the leader of this group and she can be reached at 250 712-9797 or 250 862-6955.

The Mission Weight Loss Support Group meets the second Saturday of each month at the Mission Memorial Hospital in Conference Room #3 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. First meeting is June 12, 2004. Contact Richard Vitkay at 604 820-1964 or by email.


The Victoria Surgical Weight Loss Support Group meets the first Saturday of every month at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Begbie Hall from 10-12:00 am.The group leader is Diana Strelaeff (250) 629-3102.  If the meeting falls on a holiday weekend, the meeting will be held on the following Saturday.

Questions to ask  your Bariatric Surgeon

1.   What pre-op testing do you require (blood tests, upper GI, lung x-rays,sleep ect)?
2    What can I do to prepare for surgery, such as dieting, exercise, ect.
3    Do I have to do anything special the last few day before surgery, such as  clear diets,      fasting, bowel cleanse, special soaps ?
4    Am I required to stop smoking prior to surgery?
5    Does sleep apnea or asthma affect the surgery?
6    Do medication allergies affect surgery?
7    Please describe your surgery of choice.
8    Is the surgery laproscopic or open. How big are the average incisions?
9    Do you staple, band or suture the stomach?
10  Do you separate the stomach pouch from the distal bypassed stomach?
11  How much intestine do you bypass?
12  What size is the pouch?
13  Distal or Proximal surgery?
14  Do you prescribe antacid post-op?
15  How long will I be in surgery?
16  How long in recovery?
17  What hospital? Can my companion stay?
18  What types of pain management is provided?
19  Will I have an epidural?
20  What IV's
21  Will I have a nasal tube, a catheter, a ventilator?
